Chambliss, Isakson Announce Agriculture Funds for the Flint River Basin

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, and Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today announced that the Senate version of the fiscal year 2006 funding bill for the U.S. Department of Agriculture includes $3.57 million in funding for soil and water conservation programs for the Flint River Basin in southwest Georgia.
“This on-going funding has saved more than 2.5 million gallons of water in the forty-two counties affected by the Flint River,” said Chambliss. “As Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, I will continue working on behalf of this important conservation initiative.”

“The citizens of Georgia will benefit greatly from these essential programs for the Flint River Basin,” Isakson said. “I am pleased the Senate saw fit to support this worthy project."

The Flint River Basin consists of a total of 5,422,872 acres lying in the western portion of Georgia. This cost-share program will use the continued funding to create ponds for water storage and assist producers in modernizing current irrigation system.
