WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance with jurisdiction over tax reform, today released the following statement applauding the Senate tax reform proposal announced by the committee, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act:

“For too many families, wages have remained stagnant for far too long while health care and other basic necessities have become increasingly expensive. For job creators, business tax rates are too high and thwart competitiveness.

“By taking these long-awaited and important steps to gut and rewrite our tax code, we are demonstrating that America is ready to compete again and our nation is open for business. We need a laser-focused approach in Washington to help our nation’s economy move well beyond the tepid growth we’ve seen for the last decade, drive employment gains and get money back into the pockets of Americans.

“This once-in-a-generation tax overhaul will bring a new era of job growth, wage increases and a higher standard of living for American workers and families.

“The Senate tax reform proposal will provide tax relief to hardworking Americans, bring about more jobs and bigger paychecks through increased economic growth, foster greater opportunities for American businesses, large and small, to bring jobs and investment home, and create a simpler and fairer tax code.

“The pro-growth, comprehensive tax reform plan released today is years in the making after more than 70 bipartisan hearings during the past seven years. Our end goal is to come together with our colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to advance pro-growth tax reform that will lower taxes for Americans and job-creating businesses in our country.

“I want to thank my colleagues on the Senate Finance Committee and especially the work of our chairman, Senator Orrin Hatch, for his leadership on this comprehensive tax reform package that will simplify our broken tax code and show the world that the United States will again be a world-class competitor in the global marketplace.”

Background:

On Sept. 27, 2017, Isakson joined U.S. Senate and U.S. House leaders at an event in the U.S. Capitol to mark the release of a unified framework for comprehensive tax reform.

Isakson has served on the committee for four years, participating in dozens of bipartisan hearings on tax reform. Bipartisan tax reform options were published by the committee in 2015 and were the product of many roundtable discussions about how best to move forward on keeping American jobs at home and money in the pockets of the workers who have earned it.
